“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden."
Matthew 5:14 (NLT)
Rod Smith and I go back a long way! This Brother in Christ and I teamed up when we we teens attending Bible Studies at the Kragies place that they Lovingly christened "The Freedom Farm"!
Shortly after meeting and getting to know Rodney (as he was commonly referred to as in those days) we were both blessed to be able to attend "New Hope Christian School". That's where a bond of fellowship was cemented that was to endure time and distance.
We both loved playing guitar and singing God's praises. I wrote a lot of music then and often Rodney and I would collaborate on pieces or fine tune portions of songs that just weren't flowing right for me.
At New Hope we were frequently seen with our guitars parading the hallways singing and engaging anyone who would sing with us during break periods.
Inevitably those breaks would come to an end and the staff would attempt to round up all the students and funnel us back to our desks.
That is when we would break into a chorus of "Break is over, time to go back to class!" As we reluctantly returned to our seats, and the staff would roll their eyes!
The purpose of all that singing and playing was more than the music. Jane, Jean, and so many other Jesus Freaks were community. We in unison were letting our lil light shine in the ways we knew best. The music and sharing the insights of the scripture while pairing it with our young lives.
It was a wonderful time!
But after my graduation, Rodney and I fell out of touch until many years later when we found each other again on FB; both letting the light shine through the music.
We'd both had struggled in our walk during the time we were separated but God reunited us on FB. We never again were face to face sing together but it was a blessing to know that our brotherly bonds in Christ Jesus were resounding with that light!
This last week Rodney's light was called home. While I am certain his infectious joy and persistent sharing of his love of music spawned many other to spread their light in the same way, his light left us.
And that can't help but be missed.
So as we bid our dear Brother farewell for a season we immediately notice part of our ensemble is missing! It is to us left behind to take up the melody and sing...
"Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father's glory
Blaze, Spirit, blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light"
See you soon Brother Rod!!!
